How to Choose a Leather Handbag: 7 Things to Look for Before You Buy

Come scegliere una borsa in pelle: 7 cose da controllare prima di acquistarla

A leather handbag can stay with us for years. Sometimes for decades.

It comes to work with us, travels with us, ends up on restaurant chairs or train seats, and carries far more than we ever imagined when we bought it. Over time, it becomes part of our everyday life.

But not every leather handbag is made to last — and, above all, to age beautifully.

When choosing a bag, it is easy to be drawn to its colour, shape or the latest trend. Yet some of the most important signs of quality are found in the details: the leather, the construction, the stitching, the lining, the hardware, and even the way the bag works with our body and our lifestyle.

And what if we are shopping online, without being able to touch or try the bag?

We simply need to learn to look more carefully.

So, how do you choose a leather handbag that is beautiful, functional and made to last?

Here are seven things to look for before choosing a leather bag, whether you are shopping in a boutique or online.

1. Start with the leather

The words “genuine leather” alone do not tell us everything about the quality of a handbag.

Leather can vary enormously depending on the hide, the tanning process, the way it has been treated and the type of finish used.

A perfectly uniform surface, for example, is not necessarily a sign of superior quality. Good leather may show subtle variations in grain, colour and texture.

Leather is a natural material. And precisely because of this, it does not have to look identical from one centimetre to the next.

If we have the opportunity to see the bag in person, we should look at it — but also touch it. Quality leather should feel pleasant, natural and substantial rather than excessively plastic or artificial.

What if we are buying online?

Look for detailed, high-resolution photographs.

Don't stop at the main product image. Zoom in on the grain of the leather, the corners, the edges and the areas where the material naturally bends.

And read the description carefully.

“Leather bag” or “genuine leather handbag” are very general descriptions. A good product page should explain what material has been used and, where possible, provide information about how and where it was made.

The more significant the investment, the more reasonable it is to expect transparency about what we are buying.

2. Look at how the bag is constructed

Beautiful leather alone does not make a beautiful handbag.

Construction matters just as much.

Look at how the different parts come together. Does the bag hold its intended shape? Are the edges carefully finished? Do the handles feel secure? Does the structure look balanced?

This is particularly important with structured handbags, where even a small imperfection in construction can affect the overall silhouette.

With handmade leather bags, construction is often where craftsmanship becomes most visible.

When shopping online, look for photographs of the bag from different angles: front, back, sides, top and, if possible, the base.

A well-made handbag should look good even from the angles that usually receive less attention.

3. Check the stitching

Stitching is one of the simplest ways to understand how a handbag has been made.

Look closely.

The stitches should generally be regular and consistent, particularly around handles, corners, closures and other areas that are likely to receive more stress.

Loose threads, very irregular lines or stitching that already appears strained can be warning signs.

The question is not simply:

“Does it look beautiful today?”

But also:

“What will it look like after I have carried it a hundred times?”

When shopping online, close-up photography becomes particularly useful. Zoom in and look at the areas of the bag you might normally overlook.

Quality is often hidden in details that only become important over time.

4. Don't underestimate the hardware

Zips, clasps, buckles, rings, feet and metal handles may look like decorative details.

In reality, they are working parts of a handbag.

If you are in a shop, open the zip. Try the clasp. Pick the bag up by its handles.

The hardware should feel appropriate to the weight and construction of the bag, operate smoothly and feel secure.

Also look at the relationship between metal and leather. Hardware should feel integrated into the design rather than simply added as decoration.

This is one of those details that can completely change the perception of a quality leather bag.

Online, of course, you cannot test a zip.

But you can look for close-up photographs of the hardware and, even better, videos of the product.

Movement can reveal a great deal: how the bag opens, how the closures work, how structured or soft it is and how the handles move.

5. Look inside

We often fall in love with a handbag from the outside.

But we live with it mostly from the inside.

Open it.

Look at the lining, pockets, internal stitching and finishing.

Is the lining properly fitted? Does the material feel durable? Are the pockets genuinely useful? Can you easily find what you need?

The inside of a handbag can tell you a great deal about the care that went into making it.

And then there is functionality.

A beautiful bag that makes everyday life difficult will probably spend much more time in your wardrobe than on your arm.

When shopping online, always look for photographs of the interior and information about pockets, compartments and closures.

Then ask yourself a very simple question:

Will everything I carry every day actually fit inside?

Phone, wallet and glasses are easy. But if you normally carry a diary, tablet, water bottle or make-up pouch, it is worth checking before you buy.

6. Think about proportions, not just size

When choosing a handbag, we often ask:

“Is it big enough?”

Perhaps we should ask a different question:

“Are its proportions right for me?”

Two handbags with almost identical dimensions can feel completely different once you carry them.

Depth matters. So do handle length, opening, shape and internal organisation.

Think about what you normally carry.

Phone. Glasses. Keys. Wallet. Make-up. Diary.

And perhaps half your life.

Then think about how you like to carry your bag: in your hand, under your arm, on your shoulder or crossbody.

When shopping online, always check the height, width and depth. A useful trick is to compare the measurements with a handbag you already own. A few centimetres on paper can make a surprisingly big difference in real life.

Check the length of the handles and any shoulder strap too.

And look for photographs of the bag being worn.

A still-life image shows us the product. A person carrying the bag shows us how that product lives.

It becomes much easier to understand its scale, where it sits against the body and whether it feels structured or soft.

A handbag should work with your body and your lifestyle, not against them.

The right proportions are personal.

7. Ask yourself how it will age

Perhaps this is the most important question of all.

A good leather handbag should not only look beautiful when it is new.

It should have the potential to become more personal over time.

Natural leather changes.

It softens. It develops subtle variations and, depending on the leather and its finish, may develop a patina. In some way, it begins to carry the traces of use.

And that is very different from simply deteriorating.

When choosing an Italian leather handbag, we should therefore think beyond how perfect it looks the first time we see it.

We should try to imagine how it might look after being carried, touched, placed down, filled and emptied.

After it has lived with us.

Because perhaps the best handbags are not the ones we protect from life.

They are the ones that become part of our life.

How to recognise a quality leather handbag

There is no single detail that defines the quality of a handbag.

It is the combination that matters: leather, construction, stitching, hardware, lining, functionality, proportions and design.

But perhaps there is an eighth consideration that is much harder to evaluate.

Do we really love it?

Not because everyone else has one.

Not because a logo tells other people how much we paid for it.

Not because it happens to be the bag of the season.

But because, for some reason, it feels like ours.

At LFLY, our handbags are designed in Rome and handcrafted in Italy, with attention to materials, construction and those small details that can transform a handbag into something worth keeping.

Because we believe a handbag should do more than complete a look.

It should accompany a life.
